Day Two : The Ulster Tower and the Battle of the Somme
Today saw another early start as we set off from Belgium to France to visit the UlsterTower and the site of the Battle of the Somme, the centenary of which is this Friday. We were able to see the trenches used by the soldiers in Thiepval Wood as well as walk across 'No Mans Land' and into the German trenches facing the Newfoundland regiment. It is staggering to think that nearly 60,000 men: husbands, sons, fathers and brothers died here on that one day alone, the 1st July 1916.
