On Wednesday the Under 16 football team defeated Lagan College in the North Down Schools League play off final. The team won all their league games this season and produced another outstanding display to claim the trophy. Lead by captain and man of the match George Tipton, the team fought from 1.0 down at half time to run out 2.1 winners.
The game started off fairly even with neither team fashioning a clear goal scoring chance. With the first effort on target Jay Russell produced a magnificent save at full stretch to keep the scores level. There was nothing he could do 5 minutes later when a Lagan striker was left unmarked to head home from close range to break the dead lock.
Nendrum fought back immediately with Marks Dzirvinskis unlucky to see his effort hit the wood work and Jack Trotter having a good effort blocked on the line. Tyler Murdoch also tried his luck from long range with two decent strikes. Despite this pressure the game remained 1.0 at half time.
The second half started with Nendrum continuing on the front foot. George Tipton move into midfield with Tyler Murdoch reverting to centre half. The pressure eventually told when top goal scorer Jack Trotter slotted home after some excellent work on the left flank by the marauding Alex Hamilton. The scene was set for a nervy finish for both teams, but up stepped Blake Bickerstaff who timed his run perfectly to nod home from a Jack Trotter cross from the right.
Nendrum managed the remainder of the game professionally with Aaron Blair marshalling the defence in his usually calm manner. The final whistle sparked scenes of celebration for all the boys - just rewards for an excellent campaign.
Commiserations to Lagan who competed tremendously well and very much played their part in the final.
