Before the Irish Schools' 800m final in Tullamore, Co. Offaly Joel Chambers made it clear that he was going for the Gold medal. Right from the start of the race he made his intentions clear as he blasted immediately into the lead. He bravely pushed the pace and in doing so made it a pure guts race. His relentless pace ensured that he had a narrow lead as the field entered the home straight for the final time. As Joel made his final push for the line lurking gamely in third position was Darragh Jennings of SCC Carraroe.
As the line quickly approached with Joel straining every sinew and muscle, Jennings emerged to run wide and gradually draw level. It was now anyone's race and a case of who had the means to reach the line first. Sadly for Joel, it was not to be his day as Jennings reached the golden finish in a time of 2.08:83 with Joel fractionally behind in 2.09:12.
A silver medal medal in the Irish Schools' is a fabulous achievement and this performance reaffirms the belief that Joel is one of many young ermerging talents in Irish athletics.
We are all so proud of you and this performance cements another outstanding year of cross counry and athletics for Nendrum College.
