In early February over one hundred pupils participated in the Co. Down District Cross Country Championships in the minor boys' category with the top athletes emerging to the Ulster Schools' Finals. From the Ulster Finals again a select few secured qualification to the Irish Schools' Finals that where hosted today in Carriganore, Waterford.
Over the long winter weeks and months Joel Chambers has put together a considerable block of training to qualify for the Irish Schools' Finals after finishing a close second in the Ulster Schools' Finals. Today against the best in Ireland Joel was one of the main protagonists throughout and with one third of the race remaining he led the field. At the end he finished a very satisfying third and this performance consolidates all the training, effort and ambition that he has maintained throughout the winter. The focus will now be directed towards the track season and with his performances this winter he should view this with quiet, confident, optimism. Congratulations to this unassuming but yet very talented year 9 pupil. Great running Joel!
