English at Nendrum College


The English Department delivers English and Literacy at KS3, and English Language, English Literature and Media Studies at GCSE.
 

Key Stage 3 English

 

Pupils participate in a range of individual, paired and group activities to support their learning in the three areas of English and Communication:
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Talking and Listening
Pupils study fiction and non-fiction, written and audio-visual texts to prepare them for study at GCSE and also for the world of work.
 

Assessment

 

Pupils are assessed throughout KS3 in Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening using the Levels of Progression set out in the Revised NI Curriculum.  

In Year 10 a level will be awarded based on the outcome of this ongoing assessment.


Key Stage 3 Literacy

 

Literacy skills are developed in specific literacy lessons. Pupils cover the three areas of Communication:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Talking and Listening
The emphasis in these lessons is on active learning strategies to teach and revise topics that directly link to the Levels of Progression at KS3, thereby enabling pupils to progress in other areas of the curriculum.
 


Key Stage 4

 

English Language GCSE
 

Pupils are entered for CCEA English Language at either Foundation or Higher Tier.
Course Content
Unit 1 Personal Writing and Multi Modal Texts
Unit 2 Functional Writing and Reading Non Fiction
Unit 3 Speaking and Listening

Unit 4 Controlled Assessment: Understanding Spoken Language, Understanding Written Language and Writing Creatively.


English Literature GCSE

 
Pupils are given the option to study this subject. They are entered for CCEA English Literature at either Foundation or Higher Tier.

Unit 3 The study of Linked Texts

 


Media Studies GCSE


Pupils are given the option to study this subject. They are entered for AQA Media Studies (Single Award).

Essential Skills


Offered to selected pupils in Year 12. Pupils are entered for Level 2 Communication.
