Cross Country/ Athletics
In January a great squad of 26 pupils participated in the North Down Schools Cross Country event at Valentine Playing fields in Bangor. In glorious weather pride of place belonged to Year 8 Caprice Miskimmon on finishing 3rd. The combined Year 9 and 10 boys team ran superbly to claim the team title. This enthusiam paved the way for further success at the Co. Down Schools event a few weeks later at Delamont Country Park. Caprice Miskimmon maintained her great form with a 24th position out of 135 finishers. Karl Hoy another Year 8 managed a great 34th out of 156 finishers. The best team position belonged to the Minor boys who finished 11th out of 22 teams. A special mention to Davis Kalkerts of Year 11 who managed a very gutsy 24th in the Intermediate boys race.
On the athletics field for the past few years pride of place has belonged to Erin Quinn. In 2009 she won the Ulster Schools 100m title in the Minor girls. Last year although a year young Erin narrowing missed retaining her title but secured second place. In the Irish Schools Erin again acquited herself very well with a 6th place finsh. Erin can look positively towards embarking on schools athletics this year as she has been in great early season form. A Scottish indoor under 15 title over 60m has illustrated that training has gone to plan. Good luck Erin.
The athletics season is young and already James Docherty and Corey Brown have been burning up the track. At a recent meet hosted by North Down Athletics Club at the Ballykillaire Sportplex James recorded 18.32 sec and Corey 19.8 for the 150m. In addition, at another meeting hosted this time at the Mary Peters track James was the quickest in the under 15 age group over 100m with 12.61. Erin Quinn recorded 13.81 in the corresponding girls category.
The school athletics club will commence in the final term in preparation for the schools events and the annual school sports day hosted at the Mary Peters Track on Wednesday 22nd June.
